The first public release of jena spatial in 2005 as open source extension for Jena the popular the Semantic Web framework. Now an Apache Software project. In 2012 the OGC has adopted a OGC GeoSparql standard that independently makes use of the name GeoSparql but is not supported in full by geosparql.org as of 2018.
