GeoSparql is a project support be lotico. Initially part of a PhD research development by Marco Neumann with a prototype development in 2002. The first public release of jena spatial in 2005 as open source extension for Jena a popular Semantic Web framework for Java. Now an Apache Software project. In 2008 the prototype was exposed as a SPARQL Endpoint to drive http://www.geosparql.org and http://www.lotico.com

In 2012 the OGC has adopted a OGC GeoSparql standard that independently makes use of the name GeoSparql but is not supported in full by geosparql.org as of 2018.
