Thesaurus Management as a Service - SKOS Shuttle

Prolog

In 2009 the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) made Simple Knowledge Organization System (SKOS) a recommendation for the modelling of Linked Data representation as online thesauri. SKOS is based on the W3C Semantic Web recommendation Resource Description Framework (RDF). SKOS encyclopaedia (taxonomies, thesauri, glossaries) are directly interoperable. Enterprises now can take advantage of taxonomies / thesauri / encyclopaedia in several ways, from the systematical knowledge representation to the so-called "content enrichment" of texts (automatically marking of relevant text segments), up to excellent support in the search process. Who is using thesauri? E.g. institutions like "Health Direct", the Swiss Federal Court, the European Community or the GETTY foundation.

Talk

In this talk Fabio Ricci will introduce you to SKOS and to Semweb's productivity tool - SKOS Shuttle - which allows to develop, maintain and operate RDF taxonomies / thesauri / encyclopaedias "without writing a single line of RDF". SKOS Shuttle supports any number of 7 different (external) SPARQL servers and it is therefore like a “Swiss pocket knife” for adapting already shaped thesauri to be SKOS compliant and well-represented. Custom relations and custom attributes round up the representational power and make SKOS Shuttle closer to an all-round RDF composer.

In addition, SKOS Shuttle supports one of the most important "Taxonomy Governance" requirements: synchronizing taxonomies data from one SKOS project to other external RDF projects and also to different SKOS Shuttle servers.

Speaker

Fabio Ricci is computer scientist (Technical University of Dortmund) with additional training and lecturing experience. Fabio is founder of Semweb LLC, a Semantic Web and Linked Data solutions company based in Switzerland. Fabio Ricci has successfully implemented software projects in research and industry internationally since 1990. Prior to the creation of SemWeb LLC he worked for a major automotive company, a major Swiss Bank, and a University of applied sciences in Geneva as lecturer and technical consultant.
