User Interfaces for the Semantic Web

Duane Degler

Slides

This is a tangible guided tour of interesting semantic web applications and user interfaces. What is being adopted from current Internet - and Rich Internet - apps and sites? What new design concepts might be possible now or in the future? What pitfalls are we discovering as linked data meets the interface? We'll discuss the opportunities, issues, and implications for people who will be users of the "linked web of data" - and we'll ask our favorite question: How can it be made easier and more useful? This talk is relevant to designers, semantic web developers, usability professionals, and business people.

Duane Degler is a partner in Design for Context, a DC/Baltimore-based usable design consultancy. He has designed numerous web and semantics-based applications and sites, backed by 25 years consulting experience in knowledge management and business performance. He has led software projects for commercial and government clients in the US and Europe. Duane co-organizes the Semantic Web User Interaction workshop series, is a participant in the UPA Usability Body of Knowledge project, and an active member of the Washington DC Semantic Web Meetup community. He studied Communications with a focus on the human change impacts arising from new technology adoption.

Evolution of the Social Search Space

Nitya Narasimhan

Slides

Nitya Narasimhan is a researcher at Motorola and has been working for the past few years on applications and platforms for the mobile and the home (set-top box) domains. In recent years, this has taken a turn towards developing and supporting social networking applications (and related social media interactions) on these devices. One current area of interest to Nitya is Social Search and she is interested in interacting with (and learning from) experts in the information retrieval and semantic web spaces to understand (a) how to instrument applications for better search utility and (b) how to leverage existing tools and instrumentation to support new experiences on devices.
